Matthew 13:24-30
“Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”
You may have heard the phrase, “you reap what you sow,” which means that whatever you put effort into in your life, whether good or bad, will have some type of effect on your life later on. For instance, if you spend a lot of your time helping others, they’re likely to help you later, or if you spend all of your effort and thoughts on yourself, sacrificing time with your family or kids, you’ll grow weak relationships with them. It all depends on what you choose to place effort into.
This scripture builds on that idea and basically says that if you plant good seeds in life, you will still have temptations and you will still make some mistakes because we are human and the devil seeks to ruin our lives at all times; and so, these mistakes grow at the same rate as our good deeds and we ultimately have to face each one of them before reaping the harvest of our good deeds. Nothing goes unanswered in God’s eyes.
This type of growth, the removal of a bad harvest, can be overwhelming. It’s important to remember the why, which is the good harvest buried amongst the bad. Yank those weeds out!
